Effects

  • gives a feeling of total presence in a moment of now
  • brings joy from the element of water
  • empowers mindful doing
  • changes a negative attitude towards the household chore you don't like to do

Origin, history

This meditation on the go has become popular recent decades, and is popularized widely (even in Today show. There are lots of books that cover this topic, but we recommend a simple yet inspiring book by Nobel Peace Prize nominee Thich Nhat Hanh called "Peace in Every Step".
This way an ordinary chore can actually become a time of stepping out of auto-pilot and reconnecting to yourself and the present moment.

Setting the training

  1. Download this pattern if you don't have it yet.
  2. Choose this pattern in Training tab or Control tab just before you are about to eat.
  3. You might change the settings of this meditation in Control tab and/or Dynamic tab to adjust it for your taste and needs.
  4. Have a few (or a lot) dirty dishes available for hand washing before you start.

Training process

  1. Take a couple of slow relaxing breaths.
  2. Open a water tap and adjust a water temperature and a water jet. Plug the sink, if you usually fill it with soapy water while washing dishes.
  3. Note the water you see, watch the drops splashing and listen to the sound it produces.
  4. Touch the water jet with one or both of your hands. Acknowledge its fluidity, its temperature, its transparency.
  5. Take the first dish with your non-dominant hand (it's left hand, if you are right-handed), feel the touch of its surface, its weight, see its color and shape, note its size.
  6. Take a washcloth with some detergent applied (if needed) with your dominant hand (it's left had, if you are left-handed). Observe how it feels in your hand: its texture, temperature, weight. Note if you can smell the aroma of the detergent (if any).
  7. Wipe the dish with a washcloth. Contemplate its look being transformed by soapy water and your hand.
  8. Rinse the dish with running water. Observe the cleanness and glossy surface of the plate washed just now.
  9. If you wish to continue your meditation, take another plate and continue.
  • Note the thought that might come to you during the process. That might be something like "Oh, this way I'm going to wash it like next to forever", "All I need to do is just have it done", or you might be just thinking about what you're going to do afterwards.

Other questions

How long should I train? How can I combine this pattern with another? Should I always inhale through my nose?
