Nefes egzersizleri ekşi zamanlardaki kültürlerden günümüze kadar geldiği bilinmektedir. Genellikle ritüeller ve dini ibadetlerde kullanıldılar. * Antik Hinduizm Upanishadlarinda Pranayama(Doğru nefes sanatı) olarak bahşedilmiştir. * Chigong felsefesinde yüksek farkindaliga ulaştırdığı idda edilmiştir. * Islam'da Tasavvuf çalışmaların bir parçasıdır. * Ortadokslukta Isa ilahilerinin önemli bir parçasıdır.
